Ruben was born and raised in Los Angeles and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area where he went to college and law school. He received his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and his law degree from the University of San Francisco, School of Law.
Ruben began his legal career in the nonprofit sector working for La Raza Centro Legal in San Francisco's Mission District where he advocated for the rights of low-wage and immigrant workers. He litigated hundreds of cases, collecting approximately $1M in cases that averaged $4,000 in damages.
In private practice, Ruben has focused on the fair treatment of workers no matter what their background, whether it be a company executive or a farm worker. He is passionate about the rights of employees and aggressively pursues claims against unscrupulous employers who violate those rights.
When he is not practicing law, Ruben enjoys the outdoors, kayaking, and long distance bicycling.
